LEED Case Studies

Total Mechanical was chosen to replace the existing HVAC system at H2 – Hunzinger University in order to obtain L.E.E.D. certification.

The project has achieved platinum certification status under the L.E.E.D. Commercial Interiors Green Building Rating SystemTM. This is only the second project that has achieved platinum status in the entire state of Wisconsin under any LEED rating system. Total Mechanical, Inc. provided (5) of the prerequisites and (9) of the credits through the HVAC system.

The HVAC was designed by David Hubka and installed by Mike Fansin. The project involved replacing two existing rooftop units with one high efficient unit complete with a new zoned system. The HVAC system was designed to be both environmentally friendly and energy efficient. Refrigerants chosen in the design minimize ozone depletion while equipment efficiencies selected reduced the annual HVAC energy bill by 35%. The design also provides the building occupants with superior indoor air quality and complete occupant comfort. Superior indoor air quality was achieved by installing all new ductwork and selecting filters with a MERV rating of 13. Complete occupant comfort was achieved by providing every room with a zone damper and thermostatic control.

The building automation system senses both CO2 in the space and the amount of fresh air being provided. If the CO2 level rises above 1000 ppm the fresh air damper will open to provide an increased amount was chosen of outside air until the CO2 concentration reduces.
The HVAC and lighting systems were commissioned per the LEED requirement under the supervision of David Hubka.

SilverTotal Mechanical retro-commissioned Wisconsin’s largest LEED facility certified under any rating system. The project consisted of a 1.7 million square feet mult-use facility. Ryan Monday provided the data collection on over 160 mechanical units while David Hubka wrote the commissioning manual for submission to the USGBC.

Total Mechanical provided the commissioning and energy modeling for a 322,000 square foot warehouse that achieved LEED Silver certification. Ryan Monday provided the data collection and David Hubka performed the energy simulation modeling.
